Volunteers Ready Petty Ranch For Farm Day
Team Members Clean Out the Garden
On Tuesday, March 31st, we had a wonderful full house of volunteers join our SEEAG staff and interns at Petty Ranch. This beautiful site will serve as the main hub for our upcoming annual Ventura County Farm Day event, and thanks to everyoneβs hard work, it now looks even more inviting and welcoming. (Here is the link for more information about Farm Day and the link to register for your free tickets to attend.
Weβre especially grateful to the Kiwanis Aktion Club members who returned to help us once again, as well as the dedicated staff from Ventura County Credit Union and all the other generous individuals who rolled up their sleeves and contributed their time and energy. Together we accomplished so much:
We continued pruning the fig trees that were reaching into our SEEAG teaching stations. These fig tree βhaircutsβ now give students full clearance to comfortably sit and enjoy both the educational presentations and hands-on lessons.
All 9 of our garden boxes received a thorough harvest, cleanup, and refresh with new potting soil. They were then planted with a variety of vegetable and plant seedlings, ready to thrive throughout the spring season.
We kept up the momentum on weeding and mulching. Using everything from gas-powered weed whackers to good old-fashioned hand weeding, our team cleared out overgrown areas. We then filled wheelbarrows with mulch, wheeled them across the site, and spread it generously to help suppress future weeds.
We also prepped supplies for our third-grade Farm Lab program by sifting silt to remove rocks. This finer silt will create a smoother, more enjoyable texture for students during our soil recipe lessons.

Please note that there will be no monthly volunteer day at Petty ranch in April due to our recent end of month event in March and our large upcoming Farm Day event on April 11th. We plan to return to our third Thursday of the month afternoon volunteer day in May. Please check back on the Farm Lab Education Sites volunteer page of our website for more details.
For first-time volunteers, you may fill out a waiver form here.
