Delta High School Students Visit Santa Barbara Blueberries Farm

Students at Santa Barbara Blueberries

On March 25th, 2026, a group of students from Delta High School traded their classroom desks for rows of berry bushes under the California sun. Their field trip, organized by SEEAG, took them to Santa Barbara Blueberries for a vibrant, hands-on learning experience, where they learned about the processes and value of regenerative agriculture.

Hosted by Ed, the passionate grower behind the farm, the visit was made into an immersive lesson in microecosystems, regenerative agriculture practices, and the importance of a balanced ecosystem. Instead of simply observing, students walked the land, asked questions, and experienced firsthand how thoughtful farming practices can support both the environment and local food systems.

The farm itself is a β€œyou-pick” paradise. Alongside the well-loved blueberries are rows of raspberries and blackberries, with newer additions like grape wax berries grafted with bayberry scions, sparking a unique curiosity from students and faculty alike. The diversity of the crops sparked conversations about biodiversity and why growing a variety of plants strengthens the resilience of the land and the farm.

Ed guided students through the deeper story of the farm, emphasizing that healthy agriculture starts from the ground up. He explained soil health not as something static, but as a living, breathing ecosystem. Students learned how worms naturally enrich the soil, how natural predators reduce the need for harmful pesticides, and how pollinator gardens create safe spaces for bees and other essential species.

Throughout the day, the connection between sustainable practices and real-world impact became clear. This wasn’t abstract environmental science; it was something they could see, touch, and place in the real world. An experience that can only be understood through actions.

Trips like this are exactly what SEEAG strives to create: meaningful, engaging opportunities for students to understand where their food comes from and how responsible farming can benefit both people and the planet. For the Delta High School students, their visit to Santa Barbara Blueberries was more than just a field trip, it was an experience rooted in learning, discovery, and connection.

We are grateful for all of the local farms that partner with SEEAG and allow us to make a difference in these students’ education!
