Growing Together: Volunteer Day at Farm Lab

There’s nothing like a day of teamwork, and getting your hands dirty for a good cause.
On April 17th, we had the opportunity to welcome a dedicated team of volunteers from Bank of America to Petty Ranch, our Farm to Food Lab field trip site. Their energy and work ethic brought a wave of progress to our site, helping us prepare for the next season of growth—both in the garden and in our community.
The volunteers jumped right in, harvesting the last of our winter garden and giving our raised beds a boost with nutrient-rich soil. With the change in seasons, they planted fresh spring crops that will soon be used in our educational programs and community meals. It wasn’t just the garden that received love—the team also helped refill our vermicompost system with coconut coir, fed our busy compost worms, and completed the construction of beautiful new wood shade structures that will provide comfort and function all summer long.
Each of these improvements at Petty Ranch will provide a better experience for all students and community members that join us.
Petty Ranch is more than a garden. It’s the living classroom for our third-grade farm lab programs and a gathering space for community events. Volunteer days like this make it possible for us to keep the space flourishing—both as a teaching site and a community hub.
We’re always looking for helping hands and kind hearts to join our mission. If you’re passionate about sustainability, education, or just love being outdoors, we invite you to join us for Volunteer Day every third Thursday of the month. Whether you’re an experienced gardener or a first-time volunteer, your presence makes a difference.
