May Volunteer News: Double Volunteer Fun at Petty Ranch

Ventura County Volunteer Coordinators Counsel (VCVCC) at Petty Ranch in May

In May, SEEAG hosted two volunteer events at Petty Ranch, the site of our third grade Farm Lab Program, where we see thousands of students each year.

Wednesday, May 13th: VCVCC Visits Petty Ranch. The VCVCC meets monthly to support volunteer coordinators from organizations across Ventura County, offering a space to share successful tools and insights. Every other month, a member organization hosts the gathering at their organization’s location, giving others a firsthand look at how their programs drive their mission forward.

In May, representatives from five member organizations gathered at Petty Ranch. Along with SEEAG, the following groups were in attendance:

  • The Camarillo Public Library

  • Search Dog Foundation (SDF)

  • Ventura County Resource Conservation District (VCRCD)

  • California State University Channel Islands (CSUCI)

Attendees received a comprehensive site tour and an inside look at the Farm Lab program, which SEEAG hosts twice a week during the school year. To wrap up the tour, participants planted their own seedlings to take home—directly experiencing one of the hands-on activities that students enjoy. The participating members thoroughly appreciated the tour and offered positive feedback.

Wednesday, May 21st, Monthly Volunteer Event. We are incredibly grateful for the amazing beautification work done at Petty Ranch, thanks to the dedicated support of our volunteers, interns, and staff! We also thank our Community businesses and Clubs that donated plants including Ventura’s Franklin’s Ace Hardware and Garden Center and the Ventura County Organic Garden Club.

In addition to the SEEAG garden beds featured at each Farm Lab station, we have been adding small flower beds around our signage throughout the year. During our recent volunteer event, we harvested, refed, and replanted our garden boxes with more seasonal flowers, fruit and vegetable plants along with adding colorful flowers to our flower beds and surrounding them with decorative rocks.

Thanks to everyone's hard work, Petty Ranch is now an even more lovely and welcoming site for all of our visitors—from students, teachers, and parents to the general public during community events.
