To get into the Halloween spirit, SEEAG joined the Ventura County Department of Child Support Services for its 5th Annual Trunk or Treat! With approximately 750 guests in attendance, the event was filled with music, candy, festive decorations, and plenty of fun activities for children and families throughout the community.
SEEAG’s booth invited curious kids to get up close with nature through a variety of hands-on activities. Two cases of preserved insects gave children an up-close look at some incredible creatures, including fuzzy bumblebees, large moths, grasshoppers, and bright orange lady beetles. It was the perfect opportunity to discover that even the creepiest crawlers have something interesting to teach us!
For the bravest visitors, there was an extra-wiggly surprise waiting: vermicompost! Children were invited to reach into the compost and feel the squirmy worms moving around in their hands. This experience introduced young explorers to the important role worms play in breaking down organic matter and supporting healthy soil.
But the fun didn’t stop with insects and worms! Children also took home pumpkin seeds to plant, picked up strawberry stickers, and learned more about SEEAG’s mission to connect students with agriculture, food systems, and the natural world. To top it all off, each child had the opportunity to take home a cauliflower seedling to grow and enjoy as a healthy treat in the future.
Growing Curiosity, One Seed at a Time
SEEAG had a wonderful time connecting with local families and bringing agricultural education to this festive community event. From exploring insects and feeling wiggly worms to discovering the joy of growing plants, children had the chance to learn something new while celebrating Halloween.
We’re grateful to the Ventura County Department of Child Support Services for hosting such a fun event and creating opportunities for families to come together. Thank you to everyone who stopped by the SEEAG booth, explored with us, and shared in the excitement!
Until next year, happy Halloween from SEEAG!
